Esperanza Spalding and Arcade Fire Emerged as Two New 2011 Grammy Awards Winners

Tagged Under : ,

Esperanza Spalding

The last Sunday night was pretty entertaining and exciting with all the predictions coming true! You simply had a blast enjoying 53rd Annual Grammy Awards 2011 on CBS aired on DISH Network on last Sunday (February 13, 2011). Most of the awards were handed to usual expectants, as opposed to the 2 prestigious and biggest awards of Grammys 2011. Yes, Esperanza Spalding has been one of the most talked-about artists among the 2011 Grammy Awards Winners. Esperanza Spalding won the 2011 Grammys Best New Artist award, whereas the Arcade Fire bagged the Album of the Year award for their album The Suburbs (beating prominent Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and others).

First time in the history of 35 years, the music organization has honored a jazz artist in the Best New Artist category. Esperanza Spalding, a jazz singer not so popular in the main stream media, was announced the Best New Artist during the 53rd Ceremony of Grammy Awards night on late Sunday that was held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.

The young artist, who is just 26, is a bassist and fusionist, managed to steal the celebrated award from the pop and well respected lineup of artist – Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence + The Machine, and Mumford & Sons. She was honored with the award for her third CD Chamber Music Society (earlier she released Esperanza in 2008 and Junjo in 2006).

This African-American or Welsh and Spanish singer, (formerly from Portland, Oregon) said in her award speech, “I know I don’t have a lot of time, so first, thank you to the Academy for even nominating me in this category.” She is, in fact, the youngest lady to enter the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston Massachusetts. She continued to say, “I take this honor to heart so sincerely, and I’ll do my damndest to make a whole lot of great music for all of you. It’s such a blessing and an honor. God bless. Thank you.”

Although, Esperanza Spalding is not so familiar among Americans, but she happens to be Barack Obama’s one of the favorite artists, who played twice at the White House. She even entertained audiences at the Nobel Prize for Peace reception in Oslo in 2006, where the President was honored.

On the other hand, the Arcade Fire came as a real shock for all those Perry, Gaga and Eminem lovers, when the Album of the Year award went to the Indie Rockers – the Arcade Fire. Even the eight-member band expressed surprise mixed with victorious smiles. According to front man Win Butler, “It was shocking. This award is for our record. We really believe in records. When we make a record, we really put all of our soul into it. To be recognized for that [by] this group of people, in the age of the iPod or in the age of the single or whatever it is, we still really care about records so it means a lot to us.”

Other Grammy Awards winners 2011 include Lady Antebellum who won the most trophies that include Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Country Song and Best Country Performance by Duo/Group for the song “Need You Now”. Lady Gaga walked away with the Best Pop Vocal Album for ‘The Fame Monster’. And you all enjoyed watching these 2011 Grammys winners on CBS this Sunday.

So, are you happy, sad or surprised to know about the Grammy Awards 2011 winners? Whatever it is, the best has stolen the Grammys this time for all their diligent work and excellence. Keep watching DISH Network for exciting programs all through the year.
