Meet the famous Shakespeare’s Othello, Laurence Fishburne in a new gripping character of a judge, as you catch the debut of Thurgood on HBO tonight (Thursday, February 24, 2011) at 9 pm. Get ready to celebrate the Black History Month with African American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, the first in the country. The Thurgood show is an HBO Films Special Presentation, which will be available on DISH Network as well for your convenience. Take a break from theaters and enjoy a couple of hours with late Civil Rights activist and Supreme Court judge on TV.
You can catch the Thurgood Marshall Biography on HBO, which is a solo play written by George Steven Jr., where the prominent Judge talks about his life and career. In this one-man Broadway show, Thurgood Marshall recounts on the issues that moved him and about the laws which he changed while dealing with notable cases like Brown vs. Board of Education.
According to Thurgood, “Many Negroes thought we were wrong, going to the Supreme Court, that if we lost we’d be back in the ditch another 20 years.” However, in the year 1952, Marshall was determined to confront segregation and he said, “I have to tell you, sometimes I get a little bit weary of trying to save the white man’s soul.” Fishburne describes the play in first person and takes his audiences on a riveting journey.
The 90-minute performance on Thurgood Marshall Show on HBO was filmed last summer in front of a ‘live’ audience at the Eisenhower Theater, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The movie is confined, as it is shot in a stage bound format, however, the narration is quite impelling and strong, which trips the entire America digging its turbulent racial history. Probably, this will certainly make this project have a long lasting impact and allow it to paves its way in the high-school social studies section.
Fishburne was a Tony nominee- the highest stage honor, as he starred in the Broadway production in 2008, which was directed by Leonard Foglia. In the year 2010, there were productions at the Geffen Playhouse and the Kennedy Center. No doubt, Laurence has rightly captured the larger-than-life character of Thurgood Marshall, which is highly appreciated by live audience, who periodically erupted in loud applauses and laughter.
Charles McNulty, the familiar Times Theater Critic, has aptly remarked in his review of the Geffen productions, “virtuoso stage command is riveting even when the documentary play…momentarily stalls in the final stretch of what is otherwise an assured chronological stroll.”
So, do watch out Thurgood Marshall on HBO tonight sharp at 9 pm only on DISH Network HD! Certainly, you will like the biography and the Thurgood Marshall star, Laurence Fishburne.
